How long does grief last?

There is no fixed timeline for grief. For many people, its intensity gradually changes, but difficult feelings can return around reminders, anniversaries or unexpected moments. There isn’t a date when you’re supposed to be “over it”.
But when you ask, “How long does grief last?”, perhaps what you really mean is:
“How much longer am I going to feel like this?”
Because it’s exhausting. Life carries on around you, and it’s easy to feel like you should be further along by now.
Maybe people have stopped asking how you are. Maybe you’ve started saying “I’m fine” because explaining feels too difficult.
But you’re still feeling it.
Why does grief come back after a good day?
You might have a good week, then find yourself crying over a song, a familiar place or something you wish you could tell them.
That doesn’t mean you’re back at the beginning.
An easier day and a painful day can both be part of grieving. You don’t have to judge one against the other. And enjoying a moment doesn’t mean you’ve forgotten someone or stopped caring.
What can help when grief feels overwhelming?
Start with what would make today a little more manageable.
Perhaps you need company without conversation. Help with dinner. Someone to check in during the evening, when the house feels particularly quiet.
You could say:
“I don’t need you to make this better. Could you just sit with me for a while?”
You don’t have to explain your grief perfectly to ask for support.
When should I seek help with grief?
You can ask for support at any point. If distress feels overwhelming, everyday life is becoming difficult to manage or you’re worried about your mental health, speak with your GP or a qualified mental health professional.
You don’t have to wait until you reach breaking point.
If you would like space to talk about your loss and explore what you need now, you’re welcome to enquire about grief coaching with me at www.oceanserenitywellness.com We can discuss whether it’s the right support for you.
For today, perhaps a little less “I should be further along” and a little more “What do I need?”
